As a Mum, waking up to the sound of rain tapping on the window can trigger a mix of emotions. Do you find yourself reaching for the raincoats and suggesting a walk, or are you more inclined to say, "Stay inside, it's raining"? Personally, I'm a 'Here's your coat let's go and explore' kinda Mum. My two boys are nature enthusiasts, ready to spend every waking moment outdoors if given the chance.
There are mornings, usually after a sleepless night, when the rain seems to deflate my plans for the day. I'll admit there have been times when the last thing I wanted to do was step out into the wet weather with a buggy, umbrellas, wellies, and the ever-packed bottomless bag that's bound to be soaked by the time we reach our destination. On those days, the allure of staying home, curled up on the sofa with a hot drink, is strong. However, that rarely happens. Instead, I find myself chasing after my energetic boys, tidying up after their explorations, and feeling worn out by 9 am. It's on these rainy days that the need to break the indoor routine becomes crucial.
Parents are often more affected by weather conditions than their children, but it's our responsibility to give them a break from the confines of four walls and the chance to breathe in some fresh air. Regardless of the weather, fresh air is essential for both children and adults alike.
My boys have played a significant role in shaping the person I am today. When the rain threatens to dampen my spirits, I've learned to pack the car with essentials – wellies, buggy, waterproof gear, and towels – and head to the woods. Under the protective canopy, we find shelter from downpours, and my boys can run free, burning off energy and building up an appetite. The best part is that they're having fun, leading the way, deciding our activities and the route we take. If they want to jump in the biggest puddle, I encourage them and then find an even bigger one. Once we're thoroughly soaked, we retreat to the car, shedding wet clothes and turning on the heaters. By lunchtime, we're usually back home, drying off, changing into dry clothes, and enjoying a hot drink – hot chocolate is always our go to favorite. After lunch, the boys are content to relax and watch some television, providing me with a guilt-free hour to tidy the house and tackle chores before we regroup for a new adventure, whether inside or out.
So, what's the essence of this blog? It's a call to open your eyes and think outside the box. Children revel in the rain and shouldn't be confined indoors. Let's give them the freedom to jump in muddy puddles and learn through traditional outdoor play. With a bit of planning and a contingency for returning home wet, we all have the tools—towels, hot water, and dry clothes—necessary to let our children enjoy nature, no matter what it throws at us. Let's put aside the excuses and embrace the joy of outdoor exploration, rain or shine!
